Wayne Merry - First Ascent on the Nose of El Capitan

Thursday, November 12th
5:30pm sharp until 7:30pm
Baked Cafe

Once thought to be an almost impossible climb, the Nose of El Cap is one of the all time classic big wall routes, considered by some to be the most sought after rock climb on earth. It is truly an epic chapter in the history of climbing.

The ACC is happy to have climbing pioneer Wayne Merry present a slideshow and Q&A about the first ascent of the Nose. Wayne Merry was a member of the Team led by Yosemite climbing legend Warren Harding in 1958.

Wayne will be bringing a display of some of the gear used in the first assent and will have a few items of his personal climbing hardware available to purchase.

This dramatic story was told in the ReelRock documentary ‘Valley Uprising’ which was part of this past years Banff Mountain Film Festival. Wayne’s photographs and writing are also featured in the recently published book from Patagonia ‘Yosemite in the Fifties: The Iron Age”.

The presentation will begin at Baked Cafe from 5:30 sharp until 7:30 on Thursday November 12th.

There is no cost to attend, however donations would be appreciated as a way to thank Wayne for his time and energy.
