New Years at Stellar Hut

What a fantastic way to spend New Years! Ten members of ACC Yukon came out to the Haines Pass, some for one night, some for two and others for all four.  Braving snowy roads we drove out to the pass and hauled our mountain of food, wine, sleeping bags and various types of ski gear the 700m into the cabin.

The skis accumulated outside the window as more members joined.

The days are so short this time of year; with the sun so low on the horizon the light was exquisite. Our group soaked in the spectacular views.

On Monday it was windy on the pass so we explored near Five Mile creek. After talking to some friendly passerby’s we found a great area to tour. We headed down the pipeline to the old highway. The powder was lovely but as the undergrowth is so thick and deep, Rainy Hollow needs a bit more snow for turns. Everyone was happy to be out in the warm costal forest and enjoyed the day.

It was around -20C when we got to the Stellar and a few of us got out for an afternoon ski up Chuck Creek. Breath taking views greeted us as we glimpsed down the valley toward the Samuel Glacier. As dusk approached we headed back to the hut for potluck dinner.

Although the turns were scarce as it is still early season the group was stoked to be out in the mountains.

The whole week was a feast. Moose stew and soup, curry and delicious pudding. We were also treated to French cuisine including onion soup, banana flambe and foie gras!
