Montana Mountain Huts Update

The Alpine Club of Canada Yukon Section continues to work closely with the Carcross Tagish Management Corporation and the Yukon Business Development Program in developing a partnership for a system of backcountry huts on Montana Mountain.

The process is exciting and going well, yet takes time to line up all the dots. Where we are is still in the feasibility and concept stage and close to seeking funders. We have spent time consulting with locals and users of the area, the expertise of other Alpine Club hut specialists, local and out-of-territory businesses, and local first nations. We have combined input from the ACC, a variety of cabin and home builders and first hand experiences with a variety of other alpine hut designs to create a design that will accommodate 8-10 users in a no-frills alpine hut. We are planning on working with the Carcross first nation carvers to add local cultural elements to the hut as well as work with ACC members and local community volunteers to build the hut. Finally, we are working on the details of the location(s) of the first and maybe first two huts.

We did some preliminary scouting the other week with a group of snowshoers just to get an idea of the approach and general area. Once spring breaks we will try to get to the sites and assess the suitability. There are many steps to take and we still need some approvals and funds before we can make this a reality, but the prospect is exciting and we feel confident that it will emerge. Stay tuned and we will keep you updated as we know more.
